Is Wake Pray Slay Repeat a cute play on words? Yes, but it's a lot more than that! Wake Pray Slay & Repeat became my daily motto because I would experience anger each time someone said to me, "you're strong, you'll be fine" or "you're young, & pretty, you'll be fine." Have you ever been asked, "How are you doing," and when you answered honestly and vulnerably, the individual dismissed your feelings because of the way you look? (at times, "pretty privilege" can be very ugly, but that's another blog topic) On the outside I appeared to be a polished young woman, but on the inside I was falling apart. Behind my smile, & well put together outfits, was a deep sadness & fragility that I could only reveal alone in my home, on the church pew, and to my closest friends. When I looked in the mirror I didn't recognize myself. I could see all of the pain I was feeling and I so desperately wanted to look like myself again. I thought if I changed my hair & makeup people would actually see me, and not just admire the way I looked. Maybe they'd take me seriously when I would say I feel like I am going to die. Maybe I'd feel like myself again. Maybe I'd find myself, and the strength to pull myself out of the deep sea of tears I was drowning in.
Spoiler Alert...People are going to people, lol
Due to my growing relationship with God I felt the most beautiful I ever had in life.
Here's what I learned from that experience:
#1 - Take every thought captive and make it obedient to the word of God
True beauty is found in knowing who and whose you are. I didn't need to change my hair and makeup; I needed to die to myself and become more like Christ. That's where my strength would come from.
#2 - Don't allow someone else's inability to see past your exterior being cause you to change who you are
The people God wants to hear you, will hear you! The people that can only see you are only meant to see you. Read that again! Know this, some people can't hear you unless they see you first. Come on, Queen Esther!!!
#3 - When you look good, you feel good
You can look like what you're going through or you can choose to look like you know God will bring you through. Yes, at times things may be falling apart & even so, I SLAY! When you look like what you're going through it adds to the depressive thoughts & feelings. A daily routine encompassing a healthy diet, adequate sleep & water intake, exercise, skin care & personal hygiene care, and developing your personal style will help you look good so you can feel better!
"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:5
#4 - God will use people to remind you of who you are when you can't see it for yourself
The compliments didn't stop when I made the external changes. In fact they increased significantly. I felt weak, and sad looking but God made sure that I regularly heard some variation of the words, "you're strong," "you're beautiful," "you look nice today," and "you'll be fine." Once I realized what God was doing, my anger changed into a small giggle and a look up towards the heavens, as to acknowledge God's reminder. The changes I was making internally radiated externally as grace, poise, resilience, kindness, and joy. That type of beauty has a whole vibe of its own that attracts the compliments of strangers (aka Angels!) in passing! Compliments hit differently when you see yourself in God's image. #glowup
